A pair of defending state champs won the first Nordic ski race of the 2019-2020 high school season at the Casper Invite last Friday.

Lander’s Kaylynn Sandall and Jackson’s Elijah Weenig won the 5km freestyle race on the Casper Mountain trails.

Sandall won the race in 15:24.9. Jackson’s Natalie O’Brien finished 23.2 seconds back, while Madyson Willis of Natrona County came in third, 38.4 seconds behind.

Weenig crossed the course in 12:59.2. He defeated his teammate Samuel Johnson by 12.6 seconds. Kaleb Simonson of Lander was 42.3 seconds back in third place.

No team scores were released, nor have any results from Saturday’s 3x3km classic relay.

The next Nordic skiing races will be in Laramie on Dec. 20 and 21.
