Wheatland Girls Basketball Team Takes 5th at State Tourney

The ladies basketball team from Wheatland qualified for the 3A state tournament as the #4 seed from the East Regional and made it to state thanks to a win over Burns. Being a #4 seed has its challenges and the Bulldogs met the #1 seed from the West in the quarterfinal round; that being Lyman. Wheatland lost that game 51-44 as they were outscored 12-5 in the 4th quarter. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Khayla Otero with 12 points and Jadea Graves chipped in 11.

Wheatland rebounded from that loss with a 57-34 victory over Torrington in the consolation round. Davis and Alyssa Matthews each had 16 points as the Bulldogs led this game by as many as 26. Wheatland also rang the three bell 8 times in the game and shot 50% from the floor.

In the 5th/6th place game, Wheatland got by Newcastle 46-41 in overtime as the Bulldogs outscored Newcastle 23-15 in the 4th quarter and overtime session combined. This time it was Davis and Otero leading the way with 14 each as Wheatland finished the season 13-11.

Khayla Otero was named all-state as she averaged 11 points a game while Kaesha Davis threw in 9 per contest and was named all-conference. Both of those players were among 5 seniors on the team so there will be some re-tooling in 2021-22. Take a peek at our short video of this team in the state tournament. Enjoy!
