The series took a year off in 2020 due to the pandemic. Now with its return in 2021, WyoPreps talked with both Team Wyoming head coaches, Ryan Sullivan and Jeff Martini, in the audio-video interview at the top of this story. They spoke about being involved in this event, bringing their teams together in a short amount of time, and what they’re looking at with the matchup against Montana.

On the girls’ side, Montana has won seven straight entering the first game this weekend. The last victory for Wyoming was June 10, 2016, in Sheridan, with a final score of 71-64. The Cowboy State girls have won just four times since they swept the series in 2006. Montana leads the all-time girls’ series 33-13. It dates back to 1997.

The Wyoming roster for the 2021 games features Cheyenne Alvarado and Emma Jacobsen from Cheyenne East, Allyson Fertig, Joslin Igo, and Kamdynn Townsend of Douglas, Sheridan’s Annie Mitzel, Gabby Drube and Sydney Solem from Thunder Basin, Upton’s Katlyn Louderback, and Angela Astorga from Wyoming Indian.

The Treasure State will be represented in the girls’ game by Allison Harris of Great Falls, Hailee Brandon from Big Timber, Aspen Giese of Fort Benton, Bozeman’s Macy Meyer, Isabelle Erickson from Billings Central, Gracee Lekvold from Scobey; Forsyth’s Lindsey Hein, and Emma Anderson of Kalispell Glacier. They are coached by Wes Keller, from Rocky Mountain College.

The Montana boys have dominated the series recently. The Treasure State has won 16 straight games entering this year’s meetings. The last win in the series for Wyoming was 10 years ago to the day, on June 11, 2011, a 90-84 overtime victory in Billings, MT. The Wyoming boys also won the day before in Sheridan, 92-77. Since then, it’s been all Montana, who holds a 61-27 lead in the all-time series that dates back to 1976.

The Wyoming roster for the boys this year includes Campbell County’s Luke Hladky and Jefferson Neary, Dalton Peterson from Encampment, Lander’s Bryan St. Clair, Mason Marchant from Powell, Jared Lucas of Riverton, Sam Lecholat from Sheridan, Star Valley’s Kolter Merritt, and Worland’s Mack Page and Rudy Sanford.

This year’s Montana roster is comprised of Missoula Sentinel’s Alex Germer and Tony Frohlich-Fair, Drew Wyman and Levi Torgerson from Great Falls, Ky Kouba and Cam Ketchum from Billings Skyview; Malachai Stewart of Billings Central, Huntley Project’s Noah Bouchard, and Aiden Fishell and Caden Handran from Scobey. They are coached by Steve Keller, from the University of Providence.

There is no live video coverage of the games that WyoPreps knows of, but there will be audio coverage of all four games. You can listen live by clicking here to KWYO in Sheridan.

LOOK: Stunning vintage photos capture the beauty of America's national parks

Today these parks are located throughout the country in 25 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The land encompassing them was either purchased or donated, though much of it had been inhabited by native people for thousands of years before the founding of the United States. These areas are protected and revered as educational resources about the natural world, and as spaces for exploration.
