Wyoming Wrestlers Shine in Virginia Beach at NHSCA Nationals
The enormous National High School Coaches Association Wrestling Tournament concluded in Virginia Beach, Va and once again, Wyoming sent a big contingent to the event. Team Wyoming was led by Sheridan's Dane Steel who advanced to the Senior 160-pound championship match. There's only been a handful of wrestlers from the Cowboy State to make it to the finals and Steel ended up 2nd with a 6-4 loss to Kendrick Hodge of Florida. That was Steel's only loss this season and earned All-American status in Virginia Beach.
Several Wyoming wrestlers earned All-American designation by finishing in the top 8. In the Senior Division, Antonio Avila from Thunder Basin placed 6th at 138 pounds as he went 5-3 in the tourney. His teammate Cort Catlin took 8th at 182 in the Junior Division going 5-3. Green River's Maddux Hintz placed 8th at 152 pounds in the Sophomore Division going 4-3 and Lyman's Morgan Hatch secured 7th place in the Senior 182-pound weight class going 4-2.
A couple of girls from Wyoming earned All-American status in Virginia Beach as Sheridan's Becca Oetken took 5th at 185 pounds with a 5-2 record. Kaelyn Ronnau of Cheyenne East placed 5th at 152 pounds and she was 6-2 over the weekend. Here is a rundown of the rest of Team Wyoming's efforts (byes are not included).
