The second stop on the WyoPreps Preseason Basketball Tour in 2025 was to see the Class 2A two-time defending state champion Tongue River Eagles. They lost some valuable pieces from the last two state championship teams. That includes three seniors who graduated, two of whom were starters, and one who was a two-time all-state selection. On top of that, two-time all-state point guard Afton Cummins moved to rival Big Horn. Tongue River will start over to a degree.

The cupboard is not bare for the Eagles. They do return two starters, including three-time all-stater Chaney Reish. The other starter back is sophomore Emma Sopko, who was an all-conference performer last season. Reish averaged 14.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. Both marks were good enough for the top five in 2A girls’ basketball. Sopko added 5.3 points and four rebounds per contest. Six more players saw the court in at least five varsity games last season. TR also has a new head coach. Carly Sanon takes the reins. She has experience coaching at the collegiate level. Sanon spent eight seasons as the head coach at Montana Tech. She starred at Chester (High School), MT. Then, Sanon played college basketball at Carroll College. She began her coaching career as an assistant with the Saints and also assisted at Central Washington. She has a daughter on the Eagles’ squad.

WyoPreps chatted with Reish and Sopko about how practice is going for TRHS, the loss of some key players, adjusting to a new coach, new style, and new philosophy, and more. We also got the perspective of Coach Sanon. Those interviews are in the video at the top of the story.

Tongue River begins its season next Friday and Saturday at the Herder’s Classic in Glenrock. The Eagles will play Wyoming Indian, Moorcroft, and Rocky Mountain.
