The 2019 cross country season kicked off on Friday with the Kelly Walsh Invitational at Beartrap Meadow on Casper Mountain. In the girl's race, there was no surprise here as Sydney Thorvaldson of Rawlins was the runaway winner in 18.08.48. She is the 2 time defending 3A state champion in cross country and the 2-time state 3A champion in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meter runs in track and field. She has enjoyed a superlative career to date with elite ability. Abigail Whitman of Laramie was 2nd in 20.33.21 and took 4th at last years 4A state meet. Hailie Wilhlem of Natrona took 3rd as the Fillies won the team championship with 55 points. Sheridan was 2nd with 66 and Lander 3rd with 79.

In the boy's race, Lander junior Kaleb Simonson took first with a clocking of 17.16.43. He took 7th at last year's 3A state meet. Mason Swingholm of Laramie took 2nd with a time of 17.4089 and he was the 6th place finisher at the 4A meet a year ago. Mason Henry of Natrona took the bronze medal. In the team standings, Sheridan was 1st with 39 points, Lander took 2nd with 74 and Laramie 3rd with 82.
