Legion Baseball: Gillette Vs. Idaho Falls @ NW Regional
The Gillette Riders American Legion team played host to the Northwest Regional tournament and hosting has its privileges. The Riders got a spot in the tournament despite not winning the Wyoming state tournament but did win their first-round game on Wednesday night in this regional 2-1 over Eagle River, Alaska. Next up was a game with the 2019 American Legion Baseball National Champions, Idaho Falls.
Idaho Falls has just 2 players from that championship team on their roster but they're a scrappy group with quality pitching. The pitching was so good that Idaho Falls no-hit the Riders to win that 2nd round game 1-0. Three Idaho Falls pitchers combined for the no-hitter as Nate Rose went three and two-thirds innings and stuck out 4. Davin Luce came in and worked three and two-thirds and struck out 4. He was lifted with a 1-2 count on the final Gillette hitter. Bradley Thompson recorded the final out on a dropped 3rd strike with a close play at first to keep Idaho Falls in the winner's bracket. They scored one run in the 3rd inning on a fielder's choice and made it stand-up.
Gillette's pitching was certainly good enough to win as Matt Newlin went 7 innings and gave up 1 run and 3 hits with 9 strikeouts. Gillette drops to 50-35 on the year and will play Eugene, Oregon in a loser-out game at 4 pm on Friday. Idaho Falls tangles with Yakima, Washington in the late game on Friday. We have some video to share with you about this exciting game on Thursday night in Campbell County. Enjoy!
