Lyman senior Joseph Turner is continuing his throwing career after recently signing with Utah State University for track and field.

Turner is the defending Class 3A state champion in the discus from his sophomore season in 2019. He had a throw of 164-8 to win the title two years ago. Turner lost his junior year of competition due to the pandemic.

In 2021, the Lyman senior has the top marks in the state, regardless of classification, in both throwing events.

His best toss in the discus is 182-5. That happened at the Highland Gold Baton Relays and Invitational in Pocatello, ID on April 15, 2021. It ranks him No. 22 in the nation, according to DyeStat.

Turner threw the shot 59-3.5 at the Dave Draney Invitational in Afton, WY on April 21, 2021.

He has won every discus event he’s competed in during the 2021 outdoor track season and all but one shot put event.

Turner helped the Lyman Eagles to an 11-1 record and the Class 2A state football championship in 2020. He was an all-state selection last fall. Turner will also participate in the annual Wyoming Shrine Bowl all-star football game slated for June 12, 2021, in Casper.

The senior also played basketball for the Eagles. He averaged 7.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Turner helped Lyman to a 13-11 overall record and a trip to the Class 3A state basketball tournament.

Turner plans on majoring in business at Utah State University.
