The Powell Panthers met with the Riverton Wolverines on the gridiron on Friday in a week zero match-up in Fremont County. This game was all Powell as they cruised to a 37-7 win. The Panther defense made a huge play in the 1st quarter when Karson Lamb had an interception that set up a Reed Smith touchdown to give Powell the lead for good.

Powell has high hopes this year after finishing last year at 7-3 with a playoff win over Lander and then a 3A semi-final loss to eventual state champion Cody. This team returns a trio of all-state picks from a year ago so that in itself is going to make them tough. Running back Toran Graham had 388 yards rushing last year and six touchdowns and also recorded 86 tackles on defense. Lane Shramek was an all-state defensive lineman and will be a force on the offensive line as well. Hawkin Sweeney was an all-state kicker and the list of talent this team has goes on and on.

Riverton struggles for most of the contest and finally got on the board in the last 5 minutes of the game. The Wolverines do have a superb all-around athlete in Lucas Engle who is an all-state selection as a receiver.

3A looks to be rugged this year with Cody and Jackson looking to solid teams as well as Douglas and Star Valley. Powell figures to be right in the mix and the Panther's next game will be at Worland on Friday, Riverton will have their hands full this week as they'll travel to Cody.

We have some images from Friday night's game thanks to all-star photographer Greg Wise. Enjoy!
