Big Horn Star Cruz Hernandez Sets Wyoming Touchdown Record [VIDEO]

Two weeks ago, in the middle of a showdown between top-ranked teams, Big Horn senior Cruz Hernandez accomplished something he wasn’t aware of at the time. He broke Wyoming’s modern-day 11-man football touchdown record. The feat occurred on September 4, in Wheatland, during an interclass game against Class 1A 9-man top-ranked and defending state champion Pine Bluffs.

Hernandez burst onto the scene three years ago. As a freshman, he scored 14 touchdowns and helped the Rams to a runner-up finish in Class 2A. Cruz broke out his sophomore year with 29 TDs and led Big Horn to the state championship. Hernandez surpassed that last fall with 33 touchdowns.

He told WyoPreps he thought he had a few more to score to break the record, but that wasn’t the case. In the game against the Hornets, Hernandez scored the 77th TD of his career. It breaks the record of former Sheridan High School great Colson Coon, who had 76 from 2020-22.

WyoPreps caught up with Hernandez to discuss the record, how he found out, his reaction, the play, and a little more.

Cruz already has four touchdowns this season and has helped Big Horn to a 2-0 start. They host Glenrock on Friday, September 18, at 6 p.m.

Congratulations to Cruz Hernandez on a remarkable accomplishment!
