WHSAA Commissioner Trevor Wilson Explains New Two-Year Reclass Structure [VIDEO]
With high school spring sports starting to wind down, it's time to focus on the changes moving into the new 2024-25 school year for the Wyoming High School Activities Association's two-year reclassification cycle. WHSAA Commissioner Trevor Wilson spoke to WyoPreps about the new enrollment cut lines that go into effect this fall, and how they impact the structure of high school sports in the state.
COMMISSIONER WILSON BREAKS DOWN NEW WHSAA ENROLLMENT CUTOFFS
The new enrollment cut lines are based on enrollment figures. Class 4A will be 700 students and above. Class 3A is from 210 to 699. Class 2A will be 110 to 209. Finally, Class 1A schools are from 109 and below. Those were approved last fall. What does it mean? Schools will not move classifications based on whether other schools lose or gain enrollment. A school would only move up or down if its numbers change.
WHAT SCHOOLS ARE IMPACTED FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS?
Cody will be in Class 3A. Moorcroft drops to Class 2A, and Lingle-Ft. Laramie goes back to Class 1A. Commissioner Wilson said the overall goal is to have schools compete in the same class across most or all sports they offer.
The impacted sports are basketball, cross country, golf, volleyball, and wrestling.
CLASS 4A WILL FEATURE TWO DIFFERENT REGIONAL FORMATS IN TWO SPORTS
Class 4A will have an odd number of teams with 15. That means regional volleyball and basketball in only the 4A East Conference/Region will have a new format. The top seed will receive a bye, and the other six will play a one-game/match elimination or loser-out first-round game/match on the first day. The 4A West Conference/Region will have the same double-elimination format as the last few years.
The 4A West will have Evanston, Green River, Jackson, Kelly Walsh, Natrona County Riverton, Rock Springs, and Star Valley. The 4A East is Campbell County, Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Cheyenne South, Laramie, Sheridan, and Thunder Basin.
Class 3A's regional format remains the same with 16 schools in that division. Class 2A will have only 14 teams, but they are sticking with a double-elimination format, and Class 1A will also have the same double-elimination format.
