The last week of the prep tennis season is upon us. The 2025 Wyoming High School Tennis State Championships are Thursday through Saturday at four sites in Gillette. Action begins at 8 a.m. each day. The four locations are Campbell County and Thunder Basin High Schools, the Campbell County Recreation Center, and the Bicentennial Park courts. Sixteen teams are competing across the five positions in a lineup. Cheyenne Central is the defending team champion in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions.

2025 WYOPREPS TENNIS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

The regional champions last week were the Cheyenne Central girls and Green River boys in the South, and the Kelly Walsh girls and Jackson boys in the North. All four of those squads had a regional title in at least one position within their lineup.

The Central girls are the two-time defending state champions and a heavy favorite to earn a third straight title. They won all five positions at the South Regional last weekend. The Indians have lost only one position all season long. Hailey Mathis-Breitkopf and Cailyn Smedley are defending champs at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Neither has lost a match in their prep career, and they will be favored this weekend.

The girls’ doubles competition has a few more duos that will play a factor in the medals. At No. 1 doubles, tandems from Cheyenne Central, Thunder Basin, Kelly Walsh, Sheridan, Jackson, and Green River all have a shot at the top spot. At No. 2 doubles, Central, Sheridan, Thunder Basin, Kelly Walsh, and Laramie are the key teams to watch. For No. 3 doubles, it’s some of the same schools with Kelly Walsh, Central, Green River, Natrona County, Sheridan, Jackson, and Cheyenne East.

The Boys Team Race is Wide Open

The race for the boys’ team trophies will come down to who does not get upset at certain positions. Jackson, Green River, Sheridan, Thunder Basin, Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Cody, and Campbell County will be vying for the team title. All those schools have different strengths at different spots in their lineups.

The No. 1 singles title has several players trying to grab the top spot. Cheyenne East’s Colin Crecelius is the top favorite after he finished as the state runner-up last year. He’s undefeated entering the state championships this season. North region champ Emelyn Baev from Jackson has come on strong over the last two-thirds of the season and might be peaking at the right time. Cody’s Nick Stewart, Campbell County’s Jaxon Richert, Green River’s Dylan Archibald, Sheridan’s Ben Bujans, Nathan Preator of Powell, and Central’s David Smedley can all put together three good days to make it interesting. Parkar Gulley of Thunder Basin might be the one to beat at No. 2 singles, but he’ll get challenged by Sammy Smedley of Cheyenne Central, Kale Peterson from Cheyenne East, and Luke Gentile of Jackson.

Thunder Basin’s Garrett and Jackson Moore are a formidable tandem at No. 1 doubles. Green River, Sheridan, Central, and East possess duos who will be a factor. Sheridan probably has the favorite at boys’ No. 2 doubles with Woodrow and Lansing. Cannot overlook teams from Central, Green River, Jackson, Campbell County, Cody, or Thunder Basin. At No. 3 doubles, Jackson’s Benniga and Ankeny look strong, but Green River, Sheridan, Natrona County, and Rock Springs have tandems that have played well.

Finally, there’s always a surprise or two at the state championships, so who will it be in 2025? Let’s get started.
