The hard courts are calling. The 2025 prep tennis season in Wyoming starts on Saturday. Practice started on Monday, August 11, but you can bet players have been playing during the summer. It’s a seven-week season that culminates in Gillette with the 2025 state championships on September 25, 26, and 27. The Regional tennis championships are the week before, on September 19 and 20. The North will play at Cody and Powell, and the South will be at Cheyenne Central High School.

WYOMING HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS PREVIEW 2025

Central swept the team titles last year. The girls dominated to a second straight crown, while the boys won their first championship since 2018. Four girls return after winning a title last year, and three boys are back.

Girls Tennis Outlook

Cheyenne Central is the clear favorite to win a third straight championship. The Indians return the two best players in the state, Hailey Mathis-Breitkopf and Cailyn Smedley. Both were undefeated last year. Another returner is Rachel Gertsch, who won the title at No. 2 doubles and earned all-state. Jackson looks to build off their second-place finish in 2024. Led by No. 1 singles runner-up Caroline Brokaw, the Broncs could be a factor. The other returning champion is Whitney Bradfield, who was part of a No. 3 doubles crown last fall for Kelly Walsh. Bradfield and two-time all-state performer Olivia Wilson should help the Trojans be in the mix. Cody comes off a fourth-place finish and will be led by Brenna Foote.

Boys Tennis Outlook

The Indians might also be the early favorite in boys’ action. Central returns No. 3 doubles state champion Zeman Collins and another all-state performer in Nicholas Thornell, who was third at No. 2 singles last year. Kelly Walsh brings back No. 1 doubles state champ Miles Romer, and Sheridan has No. 2 doubles state champ Tanner Hamrick back in the fold. Several top singles players return, including Colin Crecelius of Cheyenne East, Nick Stewart of Cody, Nathan Preator from Powell, Natrona County’s Grayson Ingram, and Carter Gray from Sheridan. Cheyenne East took steps forward in boys’ tennis last year, while Sheridan, Cody, Kelly Walsh, and Thunder Basin were among the top five in the team standings in 2024. This could turn into an interesting race.

Two key questions will be answered over the next month. Who improved in the off-season, and what do teams do with their doubles tandems? It’s always tough to forecast doubles because teams like to move players around their lineups.

A few teams will start on Saturday, August 16. Most teams debut sometime next week.
