Coming off their best year since 2016, the Tongue River Eagles seek their first playoff appearance in six years in the upcoming 2022 season.

Tongue River finished last year with an overall record of 5-4. They were 3-4 in the 2A East Conference but missed the postseason thanks to a tiebreaker.

The Eagles enter a new year after winning their last two games to close out 2021. Despite some losses in personnel, Tongue River players and head coach Steve Hanson feel this could be the year they finally break the playoff drought.

Hanson enters his sixth season as the head coach. With veterans like Tavis Aksamit, Colter Hanft, and Javin Walker leading the way. Aksamit led the Eagles on defense a year ago. He and Nate Guimond were both all-conference in 2021.

WyoPreps visited with Aksamit, Hanft, Walker, and new quarterback Connor Cummins, plus coach Hanson about the prospects of Tongue River this year. The players talked about a different atmosphere around the team, motivation for this year, how practice is going, and some of what they believe will make the Eagles successful in 2022.

The stop in Dayton was the second on our WyoPreps Preseason Football Tour.

Tongue River makes its season debut on Saturday, Aug. 27 at home against the Sheridan JV. Their first Class 2A game will be in Week 1 at Thermopolis on Sept. 2.
