Wyoming High School Boys Basketball Rankings: Dec. 16, 2015

Some teams proved themselves of their early season rankings last weekend, and others impressed to the point that they are now in the latest coaches and media rankings.

The top 2 teams in 4A remained unchanged from the pre-season rankings. Both teams came out with 2-1 records on opening weekend, and both head out of state for their next games. The Indians play in Greeley, Colorado, while the Camels will be enjoying more pleasant conditions in Las Vegas, Nevada. The other 2 Cheyenne teams were ranked before the season started, but did so well, that they are now #3 and #4. For the first ever, Cheyenne South is off to a 3-0 start and grab the #3 ranking, while Cheyenne East is not far behind at #4. Meanwhile, Kelly Walsh drops a couple of spots to #5. All ranked teams, except for East, play out of state this weekend. The Bison go to Western Colorado, and the Trojans go to Billings, Montana. The Thunderbirds will travel to the other side of Wyoming to play in the Flaming Gorge Classic in Sweetwater County.

The top 2 spots in 3A could go back and forth between the 2 teams in last season's state championship game, until they meet on the court. Defending champ Buffalo is now on top. The Bison could get a good challenge on Saturday when they visit undefeated and unranked Glenrock. #2 Worland will finally see action this weekend starting with 2 games on Friday at the Flaming Gorge Classic. #4 Star Valley will be there as well, but the 2 teams will not face each other. Elsewhere, #3 Wheatland and #5 Douglas are both undefeated, and will check out some competition from the 3A West this weekend, in the Bearcats' gym.

The 5 teams that were in the pre-season 2A rankings, remain in the top 5, although the order is a little bit different. Defending champ Wind River maintains a pretty good hold on the #1 spot. The Cougars established their early season validity with a big win against former #2, now #4 Pine Bluffs. Undefeated Greybull impressed voters enough to be rewarded the #2 rankings. The Buffalos will clash with PB this weekend in Lusk. That's a game where the Hornets could be looking for some measure of redemption. Wyoming Indian is up to #3 after a 4-0 weekend. Both the Chiefs and Cougars will play at home this weekend vs. 2A Northeast opponents. #5 Big Piney will visit Fremont County as well, to play similar 2A NE competition. Undefeated Shoshoni missed the rankings by 1 vote, and play a very busy schedule, with 5 games in 3 days, in the inaugural Sho-Opolis Shootout event.

This weekend, the 1A rankings could get the most attention as a number of teams will play in Shoshoni and/or Thermopolis. The fun starts Friday, when the top 2 ranked teams clash. It will be #1 and 2-time defending champ Burlington vs. #2 Upton. The Bobcats already have one big win against former #2, now #5 Kaycee. #4 and undefeated Cokeville will be there as well. #3 and undefeated Encampment, as well as Kaycee will both in Lingle this weekend, but will not play each other. Each ranking, #3-#5 were separated by 1 vote.
