WyoPreps Athlete of the Week Winners: Erika Cook and Cheyenne Sixers [VIDEO]
A highly skilled golfer and a history-making team are the second winners of the WyoPreps Athlete of the Week Awards presented by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Wyoming.
Senior Erika Cook torched the Olive Glenn Golf Course in Cody for a dominating win to take the girls’ honor.
The Cheyenne Sixers advanced to the American Legion World Series, a first for a Wyoming team, and reached the semifinals.
Both award winners concluded their competition during the second week of the high school fall sports season, Aug. 14-19, 2023.
Cook, from Lovell High School’s golf team, won the Cody Invite golf tournament on Aug. 15 and 16, 2023. She shot an opening round of 69. Then, Cook set a women’s course record of 66 in the final round. She won by 46 shots over the next closest golfer.
WyoPreps visited with Cook about her performance, what the key was, what’s working well for her now, and realizing some good golfers chasing her.
The Cheyenne Sixers made Wyoming Legion Baseball history with their regional tournament win earlier this month. That was followed by a final four showing in Shelby, NC. It overshadowed some terrific individual efforts, but the Sixers have been one of the top stories of 2023 so far.
WyoPreps caught up with manager Ty Lain. We discussed their experience at the American Legion World Series, what it took to have success in that tournament, the support they received from around the state, what it meant for Wyoming Legion Baseball, and more.
The WyoPreps Athlete of the Week nominations are accepted each week from 5 p.m. on Fridays through 9 a.m. on Mondays. Anyone can nominate a student-athlete or team. Winners are announced each Wednesday.
WyoPreps does reserve the right to modify the nomination timeline. If we modify it, WyoPreps will notify fans, coaches, and administrators of any change.
