It’s back to the Capital City for the second straight week for the big school WyoPreps Game of the Week in football. No. 3 Thunder Basin at top-ranked Cheyenne East.

The fans voted in our weekly poll, and we agreed with their choice.

Both teams are off to 2-0 starts with blowout victories.

The Bolts have handled Cheyenne South and Rock Springs by scores of 56-10 and 49-14, respectively. Thunder Basin enters the game with the No. 1 offense in Class 4A at 517 yards and 52.5 points per game. The Bolts are led by Alonso Aguilar and PJ Hatzenbuhler, two of the top seven rushers in Class 4A. Aguilar is also the leading passer at 239 yards per game.

East rolled at Campbell County, 49-12, in Week 1, and raced past then third-ranked Natrona County at home last week, 45-7. The Thunderbirds counter with an offense averaging 47 points per game. Their 336 yards per game is in the middle of the pack, but their special teams have helped with field position. They are also allowing only 9.5 points per game. Cam Hayes and Drew Jackson pace Cheyenne East.

WyoPreps spoke with Thunder Basin head coach Trent Pikula and East head coach Chad Goff before the game. Pikula discussed the development of his young squad, the progression of Aguilar, and what they expect from the Thunderbirds. Goff reflected on a great performance against Natrona, what he sees with the Bolts, and some keys to having success in a game between two good teams.

It is the ninth game in the series between the two schools in football, according to wyoming-football.com. Both teams have won four games in the series, with two of those in the playoffs. They’ve split the last four meetings. East won a shootout in Gillette last year, 52-42, but four of the games have been decided by six points or less.

The game starts at 6 p.m. at Okie Blanchard Stadium in Cheyenne.
