Two champion wrestlers and an outstanding diver snagged the latest WyoPreps Athlete of the Week honors during the Winter Sports season. These three saw individual success but also helped their teams in the process. Olivianna McMahn and Kinsey Hooper from the Rawlins wrestling team were girls’ award winners, while Cheyenne Central’s Brady Benne won the boys’ honor. The winners came during the second week of the Winter Sports season from Dec. 16-21, 2024.

Girls Winners

Hooper and McMahn won individual titles at the recent Battle in the Big Horns wrestling tournament in Worland. They also helped Rawlins win the team title. Hooper finished first at 120 pounds, and McMahn was first at 125 pounds. Hooper posted a win by fall, beat a teammate in a hard-fought 1-0 decision, and then pinned her opponent in the championship match. McMahn pinned all three of her opponents en route to the title. That helped the Outlaws score 107 team points and easily won the team crown by 33 points.

WyoPreps caught up with Kinsey and Olivianna to discuss their recent performance on the mat. They felt they wrestled well and were very happy they helped the team. They described their matches, how some of their work in the off-season has paid off with results early in the season, and more.

Boys Winner

A state champion diver, Benne broke two pool records and his school record on Dec. 20 and 21, 2024. In a 6-dive format at the NC Casper Pre-Invite, Benne scored 328.25 points and broke the Natrona County High School pool record for diving and his school record. He followed that on Dec. 21, across town at Kelly Walsh High School, with another pool record at the Casper Invite with a score of 333.35 points. That also broke his school record at Cheyenne Central, which he set the day before. Benne won Friday’s diving competition by nearly 100 points and Saturday’s by almost 87.

WyoPreps visited with the sophomore about that weekend on the diving board. He was pleased with how he dove, described his mindset, what he’s worked on since winning the 4A title last season, credits Central coach Talan Premer for his development, and more.

Congratulations to Olivianna, Kinsey, and Brady on your Athlete of the Week awards!

With limited action during the holiday break, the next honors will be revealed next week, on Jan 7 or 8, 2025.
