The first stop on the WyoPreps Preseason Basketball Tour was in Lander on Tuesday.

With practice for the upcoming hoops season underway, we’re getting out to check out some practices and chat with players and coaches.

The Lander girls have had a change at the top. Long-time assistant Melinda Cox takes over as the new head coach. The Tigers were 20-6 last year and won the 3A Northwest Quadrant. They return only one starter and lost some height of a team that lost in the third-place game at the state tournament.

WyoPreps spoke to Coach Cox, plus seniors Darian Bell and Layla Norse, and junior Kiara Friday about the 2022-23 season. Coach Cox discussed her transition to head coach, adjusting how they going about things, what she thinks of Class 3A, and more.

Bell, Friday, and Norse spoke on how practice is going, what Coach Cox is focusing on with this team, what their keys to success will be, and some fun items.

The Lander boys will be trying to bounce back after a season that saw them finish sub-500 and miss that 3A boys’ basketball state tournament. Stu Mullins is in his sixth season with the Tigers. They return two starters and want to be competitive in a tough 3A West.

WyoPreps caught up with coach Mullins and senior Brenon Stauffenberg to preview the upcoming season.

Coach Mullins touched on how practices have gone, what his focus is with this team, adjustments to make it a more successful season, and more.

Stauffenberg spoke on his perspective of practice early on, the transition from football to basketball, his excitement for this group, and more.

One difference for Lander in the 2022-23 season is their shift to the 3A Southwest Quadrant. With changes in the 3A division, Glenrock and Moorcroft moved up, the configuration of the quadrants is different. Lander is now with Lyman, Mountain View, and Pinedale.
