WYOPREPS 2025 VOLLEYBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

WyoPreps is previewing the volleyball state championships with a look at each classification. We break down the favorites, other top contenders, and stats leaders playing in the state tournament based on access to official team stats through WyoPreps weekly reports or online team pages.

Class 1A

Defending champion Little Snake River has been the top team most of the 2025 season. The Rattlers enter the state tournament with a 29-3 record and are coming off a 1A West Regional crown. LSR is led by Kenzie Evans, who has a class-best 435 kills, which is an average of 5.6 kills per set. Setter Bailey Myers dishes out an average of 10.2 assists per set, and Melanie Cozzens is averaging 6.4 digs per set. Cokeville was last year’s runner-up, and the Panthers have been among the top three all season. They are 21-13 on the year with several losses to teams from higher classes. Little Snake River and Cokeville might be on a collision course again. Other contenders include Hulett, who comes off a 1A East Regional title. The Red Devils are 23-6 on the season after not even reaching the regional tournament a year ago. Southeast (25-6), Burlington (24-9), Dubois (19-8), and Upton (19-12) have all shown flashes of making a run at the state tournament. Another top stat performer is Jordynn Speckner from Lingle-Fort Laramie. She averages 7.4 digs per set.

Class 2A

Defending champ Big Horn has been the team to beat all season. Alli Nikont has a squad that has lost only two matches against 2A competition. The rest of those defeats were to 3A and 4A teams. The Rams enter the state championships with a record of 27-9 this season. Are they the favorites? Probably, but Sundance (24-9) and Tongue River (26-8) have been hot on their trail, and both the Bulldogs and Eagles have a victory over Big Horn this year. Those three are the favorites going into the state championships. The contenders list starts with Greybull (21-9), who won the West regional, but the Buffs do not have a win over the top three. Pine Bluffs (22-8) has played good volleyball, but like Greybull, the Hornets have not been able to get past the big three. Big Piney (14-16) from the 2A Southwest is a dark horse, as the Punchers have been able to play better volleyball at the right time of year. Jaylin Mills from Sundance leads 2A at 4.7 kills per set. Chaney Reish of Tongue River is at 3.8 kills per set. The top setter in 2A this season is Wyatt Whaley of Greybull. She is averaging 9 assists per set. Kaity Shreve from Big Piney is at 8.6 assists per set. Defensively, Sundance’s Blakely Gill tops the leaderboard at 6.2 digs per set, while Lily Maslowski from Tongue River is at 4.9 digs per set.

Class 3A

The Cody Fillies are the favorite in this division entering the state tournament. Cody is 33-2 on the season, and their only losses were to 4A No. 1 Kelly Walsh. Yes, they went undefeated versus 3A competition. The Fillies are led by setter Maddie Beaudrie, who averages 9.7 assists per set this season. She has several options to go to on offense this year, including Grace Hays, Ellie Talich, Allison Gee, and Sydney Simone. The Fillies went unbeaten in conference matches and just won the 3A West Regional title last weekend. Chasing Cody is last year’s defending champ, Douglas (29-7). The Bearcats have been No. 2 all season and won the 3A East Regional last week. Then, there’s Lovell (24-6-2), Mountain View (24-13-1), and Torrington (17-13-2), who all turned in very good seasons to finish near the top of the conference standings and played well at regionals. A couple of the top hitters are Leah Ewing of Douglas at 3.9 kills per set, which leads the class, and Addyson Stephens from Mountain View, who is at 3.8 kills per set. Avynn Yost of Douglas is at 9.5 assists per set, right behind Beaudrie of Cody. Newcastle’s Adalyn Olson tops the defensive charts at 5.2 digs per set. Teammate Sydney Peterson is right behind at 5 digs per set.

Class 4A

The top two programs over the last eight years in the big-school class have been Kelly Walsh and Laramie. Those two schools have won the 4A title during that stretch. The defending champion Trojans are the favorites going into state this year. They are 31-3 on the season and have two head-to-head wins over Laramie, who is 28-3. Those two appear to be on a collision course, but stranger things have happened. Green River (24-5) and Thunder Basin (22-6) are the top contenders, as both have a victory over KW this season. Next are a red-hot Star Valley (19-15) and Evanston (23-16), who have shown the ability to play good volleyball and could be a factor this weekend. Laramie’s Tessa Dodd leads 4A at 5 kills per set. Kyan Lawlar of Evanston has the most kills at 451 or 4.2 kills per set. Those two will square off in round one on Thursday. Green River’s McKinley Killpack is the top setter at 9.3 assists per set, with Piper Martin of Thunder Basin at 8.3 assists per set. Brookelyn Phillips of Green River averages 5.3 digs per set to top the class. Reece McGrath from Thunder Basin is second at 4.5 digs per set.

Overview

Our bottom line is that until someone beats the champs, WyoPreps thinks Kelly Walsh, Cody, Big Horn, and Little Snake River are the teams to beat in each class. We’ll see how they handle the pressure and who rises to the occasion. Good luck to all the teams at the volleyball state tournament.
