Wyoming Legion Baseball Coaches have formatted the 2017 season, which includes a big change to the State Tournament.

AA and A State Tournament format:

Both leagues have decided to abandon the traditional double-elimination format, and play the modified format instead.

The main reasons are that many other states are using the modified format for their state tournaments, and this is the format for the regional tournaments.

The first 2 days proceed as normal.

On day 3, the tournament starts with 2 teams in the winner's bracket and 4 in the loser's bracket.

The 4 in the loser's bracket play 1 game, thus eliminating 2 of the losers.

In the traditional double-elimination bracket, the 2 teams that survive would play a second game vs. each other, with the loser eliminated.

Under the modified double-elimination format, that game is eliminated.

Continuing with Day 3, the 2 teams in the winner's bracket play the last game of the day, with the loser moving down to the loser's bracket, and the winner is in the championship game.

On Day 4, the 1 team left in the winners bracket will face one of the losers bracket teams (a team that they have not yet faced), but regardless of what happens, that winners bracket team is still in the championship game.

If the winners bracket team wins on Day 4, then the other team that comes out of the losers bracket, must win twice on Day 5 to win the championship.

If the winners bracket team loses on Day 4, that team is still in the championship game.

Under that scenario there would be 3 teams at the start of Day 5 (the final day).

The team that went 3-0 gets a free pass to the championship game, while the other 2 teams play each other to see who the opponent is.

The championship game would be a 1-game winner-take-all, because the 2 teams involved each would have 1 loss.

Long story short…the only time, a team has to play twice in one day during the tournament, is the last day, and that’s only if they have 1 loss, weather pending.

AA:

There are no changes from last year's format.

Teams in the East (Cheyenne, Laramie, Gillette, Sheridan) will play one conference game vs. each other the week before the state tournament. The results will determine seeding at the state tournament.

Teams in the West (Casper, Jackson, Rock Springs, Evanston) will play 3 conference games vs. each other (1 9-inning game and 7-inning doubleheader). The results will determine seeding at the state tournament.

A:

There will be 10 teams, with Glenrock joining the field.

West: Cody, Powell, Lovell, Riverton and Green River.

East: Douglas, Glenrock, Rawlins, Cheyenne Hawks and Gillette Rustlers.

Teams will play home and away double-headers vs. each other.

Seeding for the state tournament will be the top 4 teams in each conference based on combined head-to-head games, thus there will not be a district tournament.

The 5th place team will not qualify for the state tournament, unless that team is tied with #4 and all other tie-breakers fail, in which case there would be a 1-game playoff.

Wheatland will drop down to B level for the 2017 season, and Torrington is unknown.
