4A Has the Most Change in New WyoPreps Girls Basketball Poll
There’s a little more movement in this week’s WyoPreps.com Coaches and Media Girls Basketball Poll as compared to the boy’s that was released Wednesday.
Two teams enter the rankings in Class 4A thanks to some shuffling at the bottom of the top five. There’s also a flip in the middle of Class 1A, while 3A and 2A remain the same as last week.
The latest poll keeps the four No. 1 ranked teams in the same spot. They are Cheyenne East, Douglas, Wyoming Indian, and Cokeville. The Bearcats and Panthers continue as unanimous picks in Classes 3A and 1A, respectively.
The top three in Class 4A are the same. The Thunderbirds earned 14 of the 17 first-place ballots. It’s the fifth straight week Cheyenne East is atop the 4A ranks. Cheyenne Central follows at No. 2 with defending champion Thunder Basin at No. 3. Green River jumps back into the rankings at four. After a pair of losses to start conference play, Natrona County falls, but the Fillies impressed enough voters to stay in the top five, but in a tie for fifth. Rock Springs has received a few votes throughout this season’s polling, but the Tigers gained plenty of support and are in the ranking for the first time this year, tied with NC at No. 5. Rock Springs’ entry pushed Riverton out of the top five. The big game this week is Friday night at Storey Gym in Cheyenne between the top-ranked T-Birds and second-ranked Indians.
Douglas has been a unanimous pick for No. 1 in Class 3A all season long. The Bearcats continue to handle the high expectations well according to their coach Cody Helenbolt in a recent interview with WyoPreps. The rest of the class remains the same. Mountain View is second, followed by Lander, Worland, and Lyman. The Tigers of Lander remain third, as the voting closed before their loss to 4A Riverton on Tuesday night. They get a shot at No. 4 Worland at home on Friday night in the lone ranked-game for Class 3A this weekend.
It’s also the same top five in Class 2A. Wyoming Indian is more of a solid pick for the top position in this week’s poll. The Chiefs received eight of the ten first-place votes. Pine Bluffs holds in the No. 2 spot. Rocky Mountain was one vote shy of being a unanimous choice for third. Southeast remains fourth, while Wind River holds down the No. 5 position, but by only three points over Moorcroft. The Wolves will face the fourth-ranked Cyclones on Thursday night. There no ranked games this weekend within the class, but top-ranked Wyoming Indian will face 3A No. 5 Lyman in an interclass game on Saturday.
There was just a small flip of teams in the middle of this week’s 1A rankings. Cokeville is still the lone pick for No. 1. Despite a loss last week, the H.E.M. Miners hold in second. Little Snake River has run off five straight victories over the last couple of weeks. The Rattlers move up to third, which pushes Upton down to fourth. Kaycee holds down the No. 5 position. They had won six straight until a loss to the Bobcats last Saturday. Four other teams picked up votes in this week’s balloting. The schedule does not have any ranked matchups this weekend within Class 1A. The biggest match-up is Thursday night, as top-ranked Cokeville will face 3A No. 2 Mountain View. There are several interclass games between 1A and 2A teams this weekend.
