Antonino and Newman Earn WyoPreps Athlete of the Week Awards 5-15-24 [VIDEO]

The Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming WyoPreps Athlete of the Week honors for May 15, 2024, went to Mountain View senior Jaylee Antonino and Lovell sophomore Matthew Newman. These two track athletes excelled at last weekend’s 3A West Regional track meet in Mountain View. Their efforts came during the week from May 6 through May 12, 2024.

Antonino went 4-for-4 in individual events at the regional track championships. She won the 110 hurdles at 14.67 seconds and by a margin of 0.88 seconds. The senior followed that up with a second victory in the 300 hurdles at 45.32 seconds. Antonino won that race by 1.59 seconds. She switched to the field events and won the high jump at a height of 5-3. Jaylee capped her big weekend with a win in the triple jump. Antonino’s top distance was 35-07.

WyoPreps spoke to the senior on Wednesday night. Antonino explained how difficult it was to accomplish the 4-for-4 at the regional track meet. She discussed each event, her love and passion for track, and using last weekend to prepare for the state track meet.

Newman also went 4-for-4 with three individual victories and ran a leg on the 4x100 relay. The sophomore won the 800 meters at 2:10.13 and by a margin of over two seconds. He won the 300 hurdles by one-tenth of a second at 40.24 seconds. Newman earned a third first-place in the triple jump. His best jump was 44-03.25, and he won by nearly a foot. Newman ran the lead-off leg on Lovell’s victories 4x100 meter relay. They crossed the line at 44.39 seconds.

The sophomore chatted with WyoPreps about his big weekend. He touched on how there’s been some family history in the 800 meters, how he’s competed in these events for a few years, what the key to his success in the three individual events and as part of the relay was, and more.
