It was another mixed bag for Wyoming at the 2026 Junior America’s Cup golf tournaments earlier this month. At the boys’ event in San Diego, California, Wheatland’s Tate Nichols finished tied for fifth place in a field of 72 golfers. He was the only Wyoming golfer to finish in the top 40 at either the girls’ or boys’ events.

Nichols fired rounds of 71, 73, and 67 in the three rounds at the Omni La Costa Resort-South Course in San Diego. After he was even par through the first two rounds, Nichols carded six birdies and one bogey in his last 18 holes. Tate was one of three golfers who tied for the lowest round on the final day. He was nine shots behind the winner, Brayden Forte from Colorado (-14).

Team Wyoming finished in 13th place out of 18 teams in the field. The Cowboy State was 18-over-par. They had rounds of 221, 226, and 219 for a team total of 666. Arizona won it at 19-under par (629).

Gillette’s Jaxon Burr tied for 44th place. He was at 8-over par. Gillette’s Cade Peterson finished tied for 59th. He shot 15-over par. The final player for Wyoming was Laramie’s Brock Lehning. He tied for 69th place at 25-over par.

The Wyoming girls struggled over their three days at the Illahe Hills Country Club in Salem, Oregon. Kemmerer’s Tazlyn Wagner had the best showing. She tied for 43rd place. Wagner was at 21-over par after rounds of 81, 78, and 78. Wheatland’s Haylie Nelson finished 69th. She was 45-over par. Evanston’s Madison Brown and Buffalo’s Addison Bettinger were No. 71 and 72 in the field of 72 golfers. Brown shot 59-over par, and Bettinger was 60-over par.

Wyoming was last out of the 18 teams in the event. They shot a three-round total of 771, or plus-123. Team Wyoming posted scores of 257, 262, and 252 over their three rounds.

San Diego will host the girls’ event next year, and the boys’ tournament returns to Southern California in 2027 after San Diego stepped in for Mexico this year.

The Wyoming High School golf season begins with practice on Monday, August 10. The 2026 season starts on Wednesday, August 12, with three events in Douglas, Powell, and Sheridan.
