Longtime Cody coach Scott Shaffer was selected as the girls’ assistant Coach of the Year at the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) convention last week in North Dakota. Coach Shaffer was unable to attend this year’s event for various reasons, but congratulations on a well-deserved award. The annual NHSACA convention was in Bismarck, ND, on June 22-27, 2024.

There were 12 finalists from Wyoming this year, which included ten head coaches and two assistants, who have made a major impact on their respective schools and teams. Just like Coach Shaffer, not all 12 coaches were able to make this year’s convention. WyoPreps thanks Heath Hayes for the information and the photo of the Wyoming coaches, who were able to make this year’s event.

The finalists for Coach of the Year honors from Wyoming were:

Boys Assistant – Ballard Johnson, Star Valley

Girls Assistant – Scott Shaffer, Cody (National winner)

Boys Basketball – Aaron Abel, Worland

Girls Basketball – Cody Helenbolt, Douglas (now former head coach)

Boys Cross Country – Ty Draney, Star Valley

Girls Cross Country – Rex Hohnholt, Saratoga

Girls Track & Field – Scott Smith, Powell

Golf – Lars Flanagan, Riverton

Soccer – Marian Miears, Cody

Softball – Doug Cox, Thunder Basin

Special Sports (Indoor Track) – Bruce Mowry, Cheyenne Central

Swimming and Diving – Jim Jenkins, Jackson

We salute these great coaches around the state for their contributions. Thank you!
