WyoPreps Class 2A Basketball Preview 2024-25 [VIDEOS]
The defending 2A champion basketball teams are looking to go back-to-back as the 2024-25 season is underway. Both the Tongue River girls and Wyoming Indian boys return their nucleus from last year’s championship squads. With everyone trying to take them down, these two know they start this season with a target on their back. In place of our typical preseason basketball tour, due to David’s travel schedule, WyoPreps reached out to visit with the defending state champion head coaches to preview the 2024-25 season.
WYOMING HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL CLASS 2A OUTLOOK FOR 2024-25
Tongue River was the preseason favorite in last year’s WyoPreps Coaches and Media Girls Basketball Poll. They spent all but one week last season atop those rankings, and the Eagles paid it off with a state championship last March. Four starters, three all-state selections, and four more veterans return for TR, as they seek the 11th girls’ basketball title in school history. Led by Paxten Aksamit, Chaney Reish, and Afton Cummins, the Eagles know how to play at a high level and look to continue that trend in 2025. They are the team to beat
WyoPreps visited with Tongue River head coach Amanda Cummins to find out what’s going on with her squad. She discussed turning the chapter, not being worried about the favorite role or target on their back, continuing their development, some of the 2A competition, and more.
WyoPreps reached out to all 2A girls’ basketball coaches for a preview of the 2024-25 season from their perspective. Not all coaches responded to our survey.
2A Girls Basketball Favorites = Tongue River, Wyoming Indian
Other contenders = Sundance, Rocky Mountain, Pine Bluffs, Thermopolis
Top Returning Players = Paxten Aksamit, Chaney Reish, Afton Cummins, Taya Dixey, Lauren Bassett, Jaylin Mills, Janae Skidmore, Jessica Hoffman, Avery Gray, Morgan Donelson, Natalie Walker, Jayssie Owsley
WyoPreps outlook: With all their experience, Tongue River is the favorite. Wyoming Indian returns one key player in Dixey, but everyone in the state knows how good of a coach Aleta Moss is, so despite losing 14 seniors, coaches and the media feel they will be in the mix. Mills leads a Sundance squad that has potential if some young players can step up their game. Bassett leads a solid Lady Grizz team that could control the 2A Northwest. Thermopolis is a new factor in the West region after coming down from 3A the last several years and with a new head coach. They have experience and just need to use that to their benefit. Pine Bluffs returns key pieces, which makes the Hornets one in the mix, as well. There might be a dark horse or two out there, as well.
2A Boys Basketball
The Wyoming Indian Chiefs know about the pressure of playing with expectations. It’s that way every year. The defending 2A boys’ champs return seven key players from last season’s title team, plus have some great numbers entering the new season, according to head coach Craig Ferris. Cordell Spoonhunter was an all-conference performer last year. He and Heeyeiniitou Monroe-Black will be counted on to lead the charge for a very good Chiefs squad. WyoPreps caught up with Coach Ferris to discuss the new season. He knows about the high expectations, understands how they deal with those expectations will be key to their success, loves the depth they have, discusses their focus in practice, and more.

2A Boys Basketball Favorites = Wyoming Indian, Wright
Other contenders = Thermopolis, Big Horn, Pine Bluffs
Top Returning Players = Cordell Spoonhunter, Heeyeiniitou Monroe-Black, Jaxxon Neeley, Mitch Strohschein, Carsten Freeburg, Brody Potter, Cole Minchow, Bryce Haslem, Cordell Brown, Ethyn Perkins, Quinton Clark, Braxton Mills
WyoPreps outlook: A lot of coaches feel the Chiefs and Panthers will be vying for the top spot all season. It’s hard to argue against that because of the talent both teams return. Just like their girls, Thermopolis could be an x-factor. How will they be coming down from 3A? Coach Corpening has a veteran team that could make some noise. Both Big Horn and Pine Bluffs return several key players, so you know the Rams and Hornets will be tough. Other questions include whether Rocky Mountain can bounce back from a sub-par season for their high standards. Can Sundance take a step forward on the tough east side of the state? Can Kemmerer maintain despite the loss of a big-time scorer and rebounder? We will get some answers soon enough.
