The 2025 Wyoming High School Cross Country State Championships are in Cheyenne for the third straight year and will run on the Little America Golf Course for the second consecutive year. On Saturday, three individual champions return to defend their title from last year. The other three divisions will have a new champion at the top of the podium.

WYOPREPS CROSS COUNTRY STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2025 OUTLOOK

In Class 2A, the top nine finishers in 2024 return to this year’s girls’ field. Lyla Marney of Big Horn won last year’s title as a freshman. For the boys, Jadeth Elder of Thermopolis returns to defend his crown from 2024. Seven of last year’s top ten are back to race this year.

In 3A, seven of last year’s top ten in the girls’ division return for the 2025 state championship. With no defending champion, this field features several runners who can challenge for the title. The boys’ field has only three runners from 2024’s top ten finishers. Ethan Rayo of Buffalo, Sam Cunningham from Newcastle, and Mountain View’s Colt Madsen are contenders for the title.

Half of the 4A girls’ top ten finishers from 2024 return for this year’s race. Maggie Madsen from Cheyenne East tries to repeat as the champ. She did not run in the conference meet. Only three of the top ten are back on the boys’ side. Colton Cranney of Star Valley, not the defending champ, will try to make it four straight years for a Braves’ runner winning the race. Sheridan freshman Eli Balkenbush and Central senior Race Morrell will also challenge for the top spot.

The course records at Little America Golf Course were established last year at the state championships. Maggie Madsen of Cheyenne East ran 18:26.4 for the girls’ record, and Jase Burton from Star Valley ran 15:46.6 for the boys’ record.
