The First Wyoming High School Football Rankings Are Here

The initial high school football rankings of the season have been released with the WyoPreps.com Coaches and Media Preseason Poll.

Coaches and media members across the state had an opportunity to vote for the top five teams in the five classifications of prep football in Wyoming.

Four defending state champions begin this season atop the rankings. Natrona County in Class 4A, Star Valley in Class 3A, in Class 2A the Buffalo Bison, and the Big Horn Rams in Class 1A 11-man. Class 1A 6-man is the lone division that doesn’t have its reigning champ on top. A semifinalist last year, the Little Snake River Rattlers were a unanimous choice for the top spot in 6-man. The only other team that garnered all the first-place votes in their class was the Star Valley Braves.

In Class 4A, the Mustangs just edged out the Thunder Basin Bolts by six points in the balloting. Sheridan comes in at No. 3, while Cheyenne East is fourth. Rock Springs beat out three other teams for the No. 5 spot in the poll.

In 3A behind Star Valley, it’s a pair of Broncs, in Jackson and Cody. That gives the 3A West Conference the top three teams in the preseason poll. Douglas checks in at No. 4 followed by last year’s runner-up, the Torrington Trailblazers, at fifth.

We mentioned that defending champion Buffalo is on top of Class 2A, but they have company. The Bison are tied with last year’s runner-up, Mountain View, atop the division. Both received the same amount of first and second-place votes. The Greybull buffs edged out Thermopolis for third, which put the Bobcats at No. 4. Glenrock rounds out the top five.

In Class 1A 11-man, the defending champion Rams were one vote shy of being a unanimous choice for the top spot.  The Upton-Sundance Patriots, a semifinalist a year ago, check-in at No. 2. Cokeville is the lone team from the 1A West in the top five at third. Pine Bluffs and Lusk finish out the preseason rankings at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.

After the Rattlers in 6-man, another unanimous choice for No. 2 in that division is the H.E.M. Miners. Defending champion Farson-Eden begins the year in third. Meeteetse, a semifinalist in 2018, is fourth, followed by last year’s runner-up in the Burlington Huskies, who just edged out Hulett for No. 5.
