WyoPreps High School Golf Preview for the 2026 Season

Wyoming High School golf begins its 2026 season this week. Practice started on Monday, and the first tournaments are on Wednesday and Thursday. It is a short six-week season that will wrap up by September 23. Four champions return to defend state titles won in 2025. It means there will be two new champions this year, both in Class 4A.

WYOPREPS INSIGHT INTO THE 2026 HIGH SCHOOL GOLF SEASON

The two best players in the state return for the fall 2026 season.

Tazlyn Wagner has been dominant since she began at Kemmerer High School in 2024. After back-to-back titles, she goes for a 3-peat this fall. Wagner won the 2025 crown by 28 shots. Tate Nichols is one of the best golfers this state has seen. The talented senior seeks his third straight 3A crown after winning last year by 9 shots.

The other two defending champions returning this year are Addison Bettinger from Buffalo in 3A girls and Trevan Benson from Kemmerer in 2A Boys. Bettinger topped the field by 7 shots in 2025. Benson cleared the 2A field by 6 shots last fall. Both of the 4A winners from last year graduated.

The teams that won it all a year ago were Thermopolis, Wheatland, and Evanston for the girls, and Sundance, Wheatland, and Campbell County for the boys.

Class 3A and 4A will hold their championships on September 18 and 19, 2026. Class 3A will be contested at the Cottonwood Golf Course in Torrington. Class 4A will be held at Purple Sage Golf Course in Evanston that same weekend. Finally, Class 2A will also finish its 2026 season at Purple Sage with Kemmerer hosting. The state approved extending the season by three days, so that 2A can follow the 4A championships on the same course. Class 2A will be September 22 and 23.

Class 2A

Top Returning Girls Players = Tazlyn Wagner (Kemmerer, defending champion), Kelsie Griffin (Ten Sleep), Ruth Needham (Thermopolis), Allie Griffin (Ten Sleep), Reagan Huckfeldt (Thermopolis), and Avery Bolling (Big Horn).

Top Girls Teams = Thermopolis, Ten Sleep.

Top Returning Boys Players = Trevan Benson (Kemmerer), Porter Watt (Sundance), Trevin Shaffer (Thermopolis), Colton Gerler (Wright), Hudson Leimser (Lusk), and Cash Peterson (Sundance).

Top Boys Teams = Wright, Sundance, Kemmerer.

2A Breakdown = Wagner burst onto the scene two years ago as a freshman. She left for a brief time early last season, but returned and still won. She played some top-tier events over the summer. Expect Tazlyn to be the class of 2A girls’ golf, and perhaps, just girls’ golf in the state. The Griffin sisters make a formidable duo at Ten Sleep. Thermopolis returns Needham and Huckfeldt, but the Bobcats need to fill a spot or two after losing three seniors to graduation. We think 2A boys have a few top contenders, individually and team-wise. Benson leads a Rangers’ squad that has two other juniors who will be looking to move up. Wright had a strong spring, led by Gerler. Combined with a few more returners, the Panthers are probably the team to beat now, but Kemmerer and Sundance will be in the mix. The Bulldogs will be led by Watt and Peterson, but the loss of three seniors leaves Sundance in a similar spot as the Thermopolis girls. That’s trying to fill some holes.

Class 3A

Top Returning Girls Players = Addison Bettinger (Buffalo), Haylie Nelson (Wheatland), Tayen Wakkuri (Wheatland), Jaylen Kaufman (Wheatland), Emery Hernandez (Powell), and Kenley Wilson (Lovell).

Top Girls Teams = Wheatland

Top Returning Boys Players = Tate Nichols (Wheatland), Jacob Miller (Wheatland), William Oland (Lander), Easton Lewis (Tongue River), Isaiah Webb (Lander), Josh Lozier (Lander), Cody Fisher (Powell), Bryson Kolb (Buffalo), and Griff Nichols (Wheatland).

Top Boys Teams = Wheatland and Lander.

3A Breakdown = Bettinger has a chance to defend her title. Expect her and Nelson from Wheatland to battle for supremacy. They only meet once during the regular season. A few others are good players, but the top two are elite. Wakkuri and Kaufman, plus two sophomores, make Wheatland the overwhelming favorite for the 3A girls’ team title. Nichols is a heavy favorite to 3-peat in the boys’ division. He’ll get challenged by his teammate Miller and Oland from Lander. The Bulldogs are the favorites in 3A boys again, but Lander closed the gap last year, and with some top talent returning, the Tigers will have a chance to take down the two-time defending champs.

Class 4A

Top Returning Girls Players = Khloe Romo (Kelly Walsh), Bella Beach (Central), Cadence Smith (Campbell County), Addie Plassmeyer (Laramie), Hannah Barnes (Sheridan), Madeline Tanner (Kelly Walsh), Eliana Hopkin (Cody), and Claire Rusin (Cody).

Top Girls Teams = Kelly Walsh, Sheridan, Laramie, Cody.

Top Returning Boys Players = Jaxon Burr (Campbell County), Cole Bunting (Sheridan), Brock Lehning (Laramie), Porter Stender (Laramie), Brooks Watts (Thunder Basin), Gibby Williams (Thunder Basin), Jaxson Bratton (Natrona County), and Carson Krebs (Cody).

Top Boys Teams = Campbell County, Thunder Basin, Kelly Walsh, Sheridan, Laramie.

4A Breakdown = The girls’ title could be up for grabs this fall. We think any of the top contenders, plus a few dark horses, could make a run in September. Romo, Beach, Smith, and Plassmeyer have continued to improve throughout their careers. Romo has probably been the most consistent, but this should be a fun mix of good players to watch. The girls’ team crown will come down to how the second and third golfer performs. The Trojans, Broncs, and Plainsmen look like early favorites, but the Cody girls are an intriguing team to watch in their first year in 4A. Led by Hopkin, they will make some noise. On the boys’ side, Burr enters as the favorite after a pair of runner-up finishes the last two years. On his heels is a large group with lots of potential. Bunting, Lehning, Stender, Watts, Williams, and Bratton have all shown their ability to play at a high level. Consistency will be the key to catching and contending with Burr. The Camels are the two-time defending champs. Led by Burr and a couple of returners, the Camels lead the 4A boys’ mix. Sheridan was young in 2025. Expect the Broncs to take some steps forward. Lehning and Stender will try to keep Laramie in contention. Watch out for a surging Thunder Basin squad led by two quality players in Watts and Williams.
