Very Little Difference in the New WyoPreps Boys Basketball Poll
As we approach the last five or six weeks of the season, the WyoPreps.com Coaches and Media Boys Basketball Poll is settling in.
There is very little change from last week with only one new team to the rankings. Two of the classes are the exact same as last week.
In 4A, two teams just flip spots in the latest poll. Cheyenne Central is No. 1 for the sixth consecutive week. The Indians were one vote away from being a unanimous pick for the top spot. Cheyenne East holds in second for a third straight week. The Thunderbirds earned the only other first-place vote. Sheridan’s overtime victory over Thunder Basin last week helped the Broncs vault from fifth to third. Kelly Walsh holds at four, which pushed the Bolts down to fifth. The big game this week is a No. 1 versus No. 2 showdown between the Indians and T-Birds at Storey Gym on Friday night.
The top five is the same in Class 3A as a week ago. Worland is No. 1 with the same amount of first-place tallies as the previous poll. Lander is second followed by Mountain View, Wheatland, and Rawlins in third, fourth, and fifth. This week’s big game in 3A is another 1-2 showdown, as the Warriors visit the Tigers in Fremont County Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
The lone new team in the rankings appears in Class 2A. The top three are unchanged. Rocky Mountain is the only unanimous choice among the four classifications for the top spot. The Grizzlies earned all eight first-place votes. Wyoming Indian topped Pine Bluffs for second by nine points in this week’s balloting. The Southeast Cyclones move up one position to fourth. The Big Horn Rams are back in the poll for the first time since the preseason rankings. The Rams have won six in a row entering action this weekend. All the ranked teams will be at home either Thursday or Friday. The biggest game will see the fifth-ranked Rams at No. 1 Rocky Mountain in a quadrant cross-over on Saturday. Also, the Chiefs and Hornets go on the road for interclass games on Saturday.
Class 1A’s top five is the same as last week. Encampment is nearly a unanimous pick for first. Upton is second, followed by St. Stephens at No. 3, Saratoga in fourth, and Kaycee rounds out the top five. Most of the top five teams have one home game and one road game this weekend. The fourth-ranked Saratoga Panthers have a tough road swing. They visit Baggs for a game against the Rattlers on Friday before stepping up two classes to face 3A third-ranked Mountain View on Saturday.
